Mark Norton
MB,Ch.B (Cape), FRCS (Eng), FRS (Trauma and Orth)
Mark Norton is a highly experienced orthopedic surgeon with over two decades of expertise in young adult hip surgery and hip resurfacing.
He was trained in pelvic and acetabular surgery as well as complex hip surgery by Prof. Thierry Judet in Paris in 2001, and spent time in Bern, Switzerland learning about hip impingement and hip dysplasia.
He treats surgery as a blend of science and art, aiming to embrace the very best of innovative technology with the skills of accurate and elegant surgery. This is exemplified by his desire to minimise damage to the muscles, tendons and ligaments which each individual patient has worked so hard to develop over years of training. This is not always the case in surgery of the large joints.
Specialising in all forms of hip surgery, but with a special interest in hip impingement and hip dysplasia since 2003, he has a deep understanding of the abnormal biomechanical patterns in the young adult hip and their impact on how and why hip replacement surgery may or may not be successful. He has used the Corin OPS system from its inception as part of the HAPI study since 2018 and regularly uses the system to assess and plan total hip replacement surgery.
He was approached to take part in the H1 study by Prof Cobb (H1 design surgeon) and has performed 30 H1 resurfacing procedures as part of the Embody study since 2019.
He regularly employs Adept MoM resurfacing techniques for hip implant, ensuring the highest standards of care. With a focus on young, active adults, Mark tailors his approach to meet individual patient needs.
In addition to his medical expertise, Mark has been a competitive swimmer, surf lifesaver and endurance athlete throughout his life. Over the years, he has competed in numerous ultra-triathlons, 100-mile running events, and surf life-saving competitions. Now at 60 years old, he continues to actively compete and coach in surf life-saving, demonstrating his commitment to living an active and healthy lifestyle, balancing both work and sport. Mark has surfed since age 6 and continues to hold on to a short board.
He therefore genuinely understands the desire for those with failing hip joints to be able to return to a high activity level rather than being advised to change career or activity goals.
