Who is Ceramic Hip Resurfacing Suitable For?
- Highly Active Individuals Ideal for those who demand the very best in medical advancements and wish to maintain an active lifestyle.
- Discerning Innovators Those who appreciate and are willing to invest in the most advanced orthopaedic technologies, but understand that all new technologies come with an element of risk of unknown longer term outcomes.
- Mobility Preservation Patients seeking to maximise mobility and wish to continue high impact high range of movement activities with a reduced risk of dislocation.
- Anatomical Suitability Those whose unique anatomy is verified for resurfacing through advanced imaging and personalised surgical planning.
- Alternatives to MoM Implant Those who are unsuitable for Metal-on-Metal resurfacing implants and want an alternative to conventional total hip replacement.
- Female Patients Female patients who are currently excluded from metal on metal resurfacing surgery but may require additional screening for bone density.
Procedure Details
All patients under my care will receive a personalized treatment plan, including state-of-the-art imaging and analysis using the Corin OPS planning system
These include assessment for the possibility of implant collison, implant edge loading which may cause implant squeaking, subspinous impingement and ischiofemoral impingement. All of these have a potential to lead to dissatisfaction with the surgical outcome despite a normally functioning implant and need to be avoided by careful pre-operative assessment and planning.
Why Choose Ceramic Over Metal-on-Metal?
Hip resurfacing has been a trusted surgical solution for larger highly active male patients for over two decades. However, MoM implants faced significant limitations, particularly in women, due to:
- Higher revision rates (26.6% in women vs. 9.9% in men).
- Soft tissue damage caused by metal debris.
- Mechanical challenges due to more complex anatomy found in younger women leading to revision for persistent pain.
Key Improvements with Ceramic Resurfacing
- Specifically engineered for both male and female sized patients.
- Constructed from Biolox Delta Ceramic, the gold standard in implant bearing materials for over 25 years.
- Early published studies show encouraging early results with up to 6 years of follow up.
- 45% of patients returned to high-impact activities post-surgery, highlighting its appeal to an active lifestyle.
- Technology now available to detect preoperatively whether a patient has anatomy and biomechanics suitable for hip resurfacing.
Two leading ceramic resurfacing implants: H1 vs. Resurf

H1 Resurfacing Implant
- Material Biolox Delta Ceramic with a calcium and titanium coating.
- Fixation Non-cemented, bonding directly to the femoral head.
- Key Feature Designed to mimic the anatomical contours of the natural hip socket with the hope that this will reduce implant impingement and soft tissue (psoas muscle and tendon) irritation in the longer term.

ReCerf® Resurfacing Implant
- Material Biolox Delta Ceramic with a calcium and titanium coating.
- Fixation Cemented to the femur using bone cement.
- Key Feature Manufactured by MattOrtho, leveraging over 20 years of expertise in hip resurfacing implant manufacturing. Implanted using techniques perfected from experience of instruments from the long established Adept hip resurfacing.
Registration and Compliance
As new and innovative products, both devices have been tested in formal human trials. The results of these trials have been submitted to the regulators for approval for use in the wider population. As part of the responsible introduction of new medical devices, there is a requirement for additional monitoring to provide ongoing robust reassurance that the implants are performing in general use as they have during the trial periods.
The hip resurfacing procedure using the H1 or ReCerf Implants will therefore be registered under the UK’s “Beyond Compliance” system, ensuring enhanced long-term performance monitoring. Patients must be aware that these are early release devices which will require regular review and may not perform any better than a standard total hip replacement for every patient. As with any newly released medical device, there is a risk of implant failure in a manner not yet understood from the initial clinical studies which have been undertaken.
