When George came to see me about his painful hip just over a year ago, we found that unfortunately, at the age of only 33, he had already developed moderate osteoarthritis in his hip joint.
As a multiple British, European and World surf lifesaving sport champion, having the possibility of returning to competitive surf sports (which involve sprinting into and out of breaking surf) was important to him.
Considering his age, we initially tried to preserve his own hip joint by extensively reshaping the large cam deformity and repairing as much damage as possible, but unfortunately the damage in his hip socket was too severe to recover, and this didn’t solve the pain problem.
1 year after the initial surgery I undertook an Adept hip resurfacing for him.
8 weeks after surgery he was back racing at the British National surf lifesaving championships and was able to run in and out of breaking surf with his racing craft, pain free once again.
Whilst I would normally advise people to take it relatively easy for the for the first 6 months, high performance athletes often surprise me with the speed at which they are able to return to sport, probably as much due to their inherent favourable physiology as it is to do with their disciplined approach to their early rehabilitation.
